Timeline of Jewish History
- 1066 - Jews first started coming to England after the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest
- During the Middle Ages, Jews lived in communities segregated from the rest of the population of England. They were seen as property of the King and only allowed to stay in England because of his "good graces". Jews were usually moneylenders and a source of revenue for the king.
- 1215 - Jews were ordered to dress a certain way to be identified easily.
- 1287 - Edward I seized all Jewish property and transferred all debts to his own name.
- 1290 - On July 18, Edward I circulated the Edict of Expulsion. All Jews had until November 1st to leave England. 3,000 Jews were forced to leave, however some became Marranos- Jews who became outwardly practicing Christians but also practiced their religion in secret.
- In 16th century England or Elizabethan England, there were fewer than 200 Jews and only about 100 were identified by historians.
